Last week, shortly after the holiday, my core router died. It was a NetGear WNR834B on which i placed a DD-WRT release so the new core router should be a NetGear with DD-WRT to! I quickly ordered a NetGear WNDR3700 at Azerty.nl, a dutch webshop with great support. Last Wednesday i received the NetGear WNDR3700(v4) and after a day running stock firmware i decided yesterday it was time for DD-WRT.

I searched the DD-WRT site for support and found a few versions, all of them beta, but what's new? So yesterday evening i installed the latest DD-WRT version for this router, i thought. After following the great installation manual on the DD-WRT site (follow it!) everything ran smooth. The family was happy with the WiFi again, i was happy with the great firmware. So, end of story..

No! When i tried to connect to my personal websites, of which this is one, nothing worked. Everything pointed in the direction of port forwarding and a spend a few hours searching for information about my issue. Reinstalling the firmware did not help, neither did cleaning the VRAM. What went wrong? I made the decision to revert to the stock firmware and prepared for it, when i took a quick look at the status page..

The external IP address i saw wasn't familiar to me?.. I knew for sure i had another address, so i started checking my external IP address. Seems all those hours searching were for nothing, and that ISP had changed my external address :(

After changing my DNS settings (MijnDomein.nl) everything worked fine, as it actually did from the beginning. So my 2 cents: first check for the obvious, like external address before trying something foolish. After closing the issue i also updated the DD-WRT firmware using the webflash image, because the version offered on the installation page is a bit old. Visit the DD-WRT FTP page to search for the latest version for any router.

The closure of this story is reserved for a screenshot of the DD-WRT installation.
